After researching baby slings until I am blue in the face and discovering repeatedly that they are insanely expensive, I stumbled upon the directions to make a Maya Wrap on their website. It seemed simple enough, so I decided to try it.
I spent a crazy amount of time looking at fabric at Hobby Lobby yesterday. I am very indecisive by nature and I really should have brought a friend with me. However, I decided to put my proverbial "big girl panties" on and do it myself.
The directions said that you needed fabric that looks good on the "wrong" side, and since this is fairly nonexistent I decided to sew wrong sides together of coordinating fabric. After getting home and looking at it, I realize it would be way too thick to sew through, so I skipped that.
A note to the wise: don't go into Home Depot, Ace Hardware etc and ask for an "O" ring. Although it does make sense that if a "D" ring is a steel ring that looks like a capital d, then an "O" ring would be a steel ring that looks like an "O". Not so, my friends. It is a very small rubber ring that has to do with plumbing. And if you ask for a steel "O" ring, the men who work at these hardware stores will think you are just a ditsy girl. Don't ask me how I know. Just trust me. Ask for a 3" steel ring.
The sewing part was easy enough. But the wearing isn't quite as simple or painless as I would like it to be. It does help support the baby...
If you wear it like this... it cuts into your neck. And as you can see, I'm still supporting the Sophie with my arms. Granted, it isn't as hard to hold her, but it isn't as "hands-free" as I was hoping it would be.
If I pull the strap down over my shoulder, it doesn't hurt my neck as much.
Synopsis: For almost the same amount of money I could have bought a sling at Target and then returned it if it didn't work out for me. I suggest making one only if you have tried one and it works for you. Otherwise, order and try out slings and then send them back if they don't work.
I am planning on trying another style with the coordinating fabric. So I'll let you know how that goes :)
(disclaimer: please excuse the awkward angle of the last two photos. I was going to ask Brian to retake them today, but I forgot and now I'm in my pajamas :)
